Fencing + PVC Fencing

PVC Fencing
Sure, your house is primarily a place of shelter, but for psychological reasons, the way the outside of your home looks is very important. But even more than that, it's important for the impression you make on people. The outside is the first place people look at; even passersby see the outside of your home. It is therefore important that the outside of your home looks as good as the inside looks. Believe it or not, the outward appearance of your home tells a lot about the kind...continue reading

Fencing Your Home

Installing a fence around the perimeter of your property can increase not just its value but its overall security. Therefore, if you are planning to have one, here are some important facts you might want to know before taking any actions.

Types of Fences:

1.      Bamboo Fence: offers a lot of unique advantages in fencing one's yard over any traditional fencing material.

The thing with using bamboo for a fence is that it already has prefabricated panels making it easy to install and each stick is different from another originating from its natural beauty with varied color and texture that is delightful to look at.

Just like other woods, bamboo is a renewable resource. Thus, if you are an environmentalist, this is a great choice as bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants on the planet, meaning it can be harvested frequently.

Bamboo grows in areas of the world subject to intense wind and rains, and is known to be flexible under pressure making it unlikely to break. It has higher tensile strength than many alloys of steel and is about 5 times stronger than other woods. In addition, it is naturally termite resistant and has a life expectancy of about 15-20 years.

Generally, bamboo is a lot cheaper than other woods used for fencing. Partially because it's light weight making it easy to ship thus keeping costs down. Not to mention it is easier to install because of its convenient light weight and in spite of it, still provides durability.  Providing an either a luxury or a low-cost fencing project.

2.      Vinyl/PVC Fence: One of the mot durable fencing options available on the market right now is vinyl due to the following characteristics:

  •   It lasts longer than wood or iron fencing

  •   Comes in a variety of colors and styles

  •   Easy to install

  •   Readily available

  •   Incredibly strong

Compared to wood fencing, vinyl will never change color or look worn and faded over time. There is no need to stain or paint it every season. Most of all, there is no danger to its longevity because of pests like termites infesting it like they could a wooden fence.

In addition, vinyl fencing comes not just in colors but in different styles as well. You have the option of choosing a short picket fence, ranch style fence or a tall privacy fence, depending on the property you want to fence in.

Furthermore, it is very simple to install one's own vinyl fence. Simply slide the pieces and they click into pre-made holes. No heavy labor or hiring a contractor necessary as vinyl fence materials can be purchased from many DIY stores and delivered right to your own home. Just be sure to ask about its warranty and check that the package has all the necessary supplies and instructions to install the fence.

Initially, vinyl or PVC fencing may cost more than wood fencing, but is definitely worth the investment, saving you so much time and money in the long run with a maintenance free fence.

3.      Wire Mesh/Chain Link Fences: Some people may prefer wire mesh fences as they are versatile and perfectly suited to act as decor. They come in an array of sizes, styles and colors. This type of fencing system consists of mesh, gates and fittings as its core elements. Each of these components comes in various weights and protective coats and are usually mixed and matched to make them "unique" or customized to fit certain budgets.

Zinc is usually used in protective coatings as it is also known as a "self-sacrificing" element and provides cathode ray protection, meaning if the wire is cut, it can "heal" the new exposure by naturally formulating a white oxidation layer on the surface, protecting it against the ugly redness of rust Often, the protective coats are made of galvanized zinc with applied polyester color for better landscaping and protection against rusting.

The gauge (diameter) of the wire is one of the most important aspects of a wire mesh fence. The smaller the gauges, the more steel in them and the wire is stronger. The widest spacing is four inches, usually used for light commercial or residential projects and those at one-and-three-quarters inches is usually for tight security and is also applicable to meeting pool safety codes.

4.      Steel Ornamental Fence: Of course, if you want to create a strong fence that provides the most security and still screams of elegance, nothing beats steel. Steel ornamental fences are used in residential, commercial and industrial properties.

When considering materials, steel definitely is the strongest among other fencing materials. However, should you decide to go with steel, make sure it has a polyester powder coat for its finish as steel ornamental fences on average need annual touching up with paint as they usually show signs of rust rather early, especially if you live in a harsh climate. In deciding for your home's fencing system, be sure to take into consideration the amount of maintenance you're willing to put into its upkeep. You might want to check other materials for your ornamental fence if you foresee long term maintenance a problem.

5.      Aluminum Fence: Nowadays, for those who want an ornamental fence without the hassle of long term maintenance, but still functional while enhancing the property's appearance, aluminum fencing is the answer. Although, steel is stronger, people are finding out that aluminum works very well, not to mention that they are very attractive too. Plus the fact that it has more resistance to corrosion and requires lesser maintenance makes it more appealing to them. While steel fences with components of powder coat finish prevents it from ugly rusting giving it a good 10 years with minimal maintenance, manufacturers of aluminum ornamental fences routinely give lifetime warranties on the coating.

If you live in an area where winters are hard, prone to strong wind or if you are in coastal environment, then aluminum fencing is your best bet for your fence material.
