Hardwood Flooring + Stairs

Bamboo Flooring: The Good, The Bad and The Green
Bamboo flooring is growing in popularity as the new hardwood of choice for many home builders and renovators worldwide.  Many consumers, however, instantly picture rows of bamboo cane lashed together with twine. Not so. Picture, instead, vibrant wood tones in a vast array of hues and varying styles, much like those of a gleaming oak, maple or walnut finish. Now think: bamboo...continue reading

Mahogany: Still Classy?
Once cavemen were able to cover their floors with something other than skins of freshly-killed animals, they wanted something that would not leak, grow mold, or rot on them. Over the centuries, cavemen became civilized, and were deeply concerned with building floors, which were designed for the purpose of having an even ground to walk on that didn't run the risk of suddenly changing...continue reading

Kitchen Floors
Hardwood floor kitchens are equally popular with tiled kitchen floors, but they are harder to install. If the house if not built with a finished hardwood surface floor already, the cost of installing hardwood where it was not before can be an expensive contrast to the rest of the living space. If cost is no option, then a hardwood kitchen floor should be extended to include an eating space, and, if feasible given the nature of the home's layout, the foyer and coat room. Wood tiled floors are also common in kitchens, but not as expensive or valuable as long paneled hardwood floors...continue reading

Asbestos Flooring
Vinyl asbestos floor tiles (VAT) were produced in the 1940's through the 1970's and by the 1950's, became more popular than asphalt based floor tiles.  These tiles contained an organic resin vinyl which when mixed in various percentages, resulted in lighter colors and patterns.  Vinyl asbestos floor tiles (VAT) are also generally 9" square in size...continue reading

Common Staircases
More often, inside a home, an "L-shaped" staircase is the more desirable option since the line of sight between the second floor and the ground floor is impeded and better floor plans are available since the stairs can be tucked into a corner and no large area is used. Also, landings, or flat floors in the middle of the staircase, are used to ensure any fall taken while climbing or descending the stairs will be halted after only a short drop...continue reading

The Flooring in that Fixer Upper Home
However, these floors, like everything else, are subject to wear and tear which will be noticeable as something that needs to be changed in a home that generally has other things that classify it as a fixer upper. Repair methods for this vinyl flooring often depend upon the type of floor as well as the type of damage. With vinyl tiles, it's best to replace the individual tiles and with a sheet of vinyl, it's possible to fuse the surface or patch in the new... continue reading

The Levels Within A Structure
The first type of floor to be concerned with is the sub floor. The sub floor is usually underneath the floor people walk on, though sometimes there is not differentiation between the sub floor and the proper floor. Usually the sub floor is part of the support structure of the building. Supporting floors usually use a solid concrete slab or else beams or joists to carry the weight of the house. Often a supporting sub floor is in the basement...continue reading

Various Flooring Choices
Perhaps the most desirable floor covering is a hardwood floor. While some hardwood floors are made of the original floor building material, most are fabricated laminates of either plywood or fiberboard. This material is then layered on top of an existing sub floor. Most wood floor coverings are either plank pattern or parquet pattern. Bamboo, although technically not wood, is another popular wood-like option...continue reading

What You Need To Know About Flooring
Remember too, that while there are flooring systems that are designed to withstand the ravages of moisture, all flooring will be damaged over time if installed in chronically moist places. What this all means, is that there are a variety of underlying problems that need to be looked at before you install a floor in any location, and the bevy of choices that are available now, can help you make the right one...continue reading

Laying Ceramic Floor Tiles
After that, you'll want to make sure that all the tiles are completely embedded in the adhesive by tapping them down gently with a padded board and a hammer. Once the tiles have cured, you'll need to clean out the grout joints. This is done before you actually mix the grout and spread it into the joints. You can remove the excess grout by dragging a rubber float across the joints at a 45% angle. Afterwards, you should clean off any remaining grout with a sponge... continue reading

Floor Problems and What to Look For
Most people readily accept the fact that wood floors will have a squeak; over time the plywood that makes up the sub-floor tends to separate from the joists beneath it. These parts lift up in certain spots and when someone walks across the sub-floor, that part of the floor is forced down and this is where the squeak comes from. While this can be a little bothersome, it is not usually a cause for concern in that it compromises a structural problem. Still, if you find this is something that you would like to fix...continue reading

Stair Safety at Home
Many serious injuries take place in the house but there's no need to panic and try to avoid the stairs. They can be rendered safe as a long as you take a few simple suggestions to heart. First off, you need to ask yourself if you've got a enough light to properly illuminate all the stairs that you need to climb on a regular basis. For the ones that you don't find the need to use regularly, you might be able to get away with keeping a flashlight in a cupboard nearby, but for all those that can be classified as high traffic, you should install... continue reading

All About Flooring Repairs
One of the quicker ways to fix a joist problem is to fasten a few new joists next to the damaged one to support it. When installing this new one, you may need to notch the bottom edge so that it can fit over the foundation or beam. But first you'll need to find the high point in the floor using a level. Mark this high point and measure the distance to a reference point that you've made that extends through the floor. Here you can use a heating duct or...continue reading

Top Tips for Choosing and Enjoying Oak Hardwood Floors

Rich color, Alluring pattern, Enduring elegance.

Few improvements can bring as warm and inviting an atmosphere to your home as oak hardwood floors. Their quality speaks of a craftsmanship usually found in only the most expensive homes. Even buyers looking for a home bargain will pay more for a house with hardwood floors. The investment in oak hardwood flooring can be within reach of most homeowners willing to take care in selection, installation and upkeep.

It's important to get some basic facts when choosing oak hardwood floors for your home.

First, when considering oak hardwood flooring, make sure that what you're getting is the real thing. Because of today's global trade, some foreign imports call themselves "oak" when they're really some other kind of wood. For instance, "Tasmanian oak" is actually from eucalyptus trees in Australia, while "Malaysian oak" comes from tropical rubber trees. Like other foreign wood species, neither is as durable as U.S.-grown oak hardwoods.

Some other things to consider:

Pros:

Durability:
Oak hardwood floors last for decades. Many historic homes have hardwood floors more than a century old. Oak hardwood floors resist scuffs and scratches; sometimes minor nicks and dents add to wood's natural beauty.

Maintenance:
Sweep or vacuum your oak hardwood floor regularly. Periodically clean it with a wood floor cleaner. That's it.

Value:
Realtors know that homes with oak hardwood floors sell faster than carpeted homes. Builders consider hardwood floors an upgrade option.

Health:
Homeowners or their families who suffer from asthma or allergies find that oak hardwood floors harbor less dust, pet dander and other allergens.

Sustainability:
Oak hardwood flooring, like all American hardwoods, are harvested by renewable methods.  Each year, U.S. hardwood forests grow twice as much wood as the lumber harvested from them, making oak hardwood flooring an environmentally friendly option. In fact, because of careful practices by U.S. lumber companies, American forests today have 90 percent more volume of hardwoods than existed 50 years ago, according to NOFMA, the Wood Flooring Manufacturers Association.

Versatility:
Oak hardwood floors offer decorating styles from traditional to modern. When you change your home's interior style, your oak hardwood flooring can be sanded or stained to match your new interior.

Cons:

Investment:
Oak hardwood flooring costs more than carpet or tile. Installation can require professional help and labor costs will vary.

Refinishing:
Floors that get lots of traffic, especially in homes with pets or children, will require refinishing occasionally.  Professional wood floor refinishing can cost between $1.25 and $4 per square foot. Refinishing also produces temporary dust and fumes.

Noise:
Footsteps echo on hardwood floors, which can annoy any downstairs neighbors. An area rug will help muffle the sound and often sets off the wood's beauty.

Moisture:
Oak hardwood flooring reacts to moisture. Any spills or pet accidents should be cleaned up immediately.

More options

Once you've decided to proceed with oak hardwood floors, there are still options to consider.

Oak hardwood flooring comes in two colors and three basic styles. Red oak, as its name implies, has a reddish color. Red oak is a stiff, dense wood with a coarse grain that resists wear. White oak is usually brown in color, but can have a grayish cast. It too has a coarse grain, but with more swirls and burls than red oak. White oak is harder and more durable than red oak, and thus more expensive.

Both types of oak also can come from heartwood or sapwood. Heartwood comes from the innermost section of the log and is often richer and darker in color. Sapwood lies closest to the tree's bark and is usually lighter wood. In fact, the colors of oak heartwood flooring and oak sapwood flooring can be so different that wood from the same log is marketed under different names.

Whatever its color, oak hardwood flooring comes in three styles: strip, plank and parquet.

Strip flooring:
This type of flooring has set widths of 1-1/2 inches, 2 inches and 2-1/4 inches. It varies in thickness, ranging from 5/16 of an inch to 3/4 of an inch.

Plank flooring:
This type of flooring, unlike strip flooring, comes in varying widths, but is only in thicknesses of 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch. Its widths range from 3 inches to 8 inches.

Parquet flooring
: Parquet floors are composed of individual wood slats put together with adhesive or mechanical fasteners. They are made into geometrical patterns.

Installation

Many homeowners who choose oak hardwood flooring prefer to leave installation to professional contractors. However, the careful homeowner will keep tabs on the installation.

A reputable contractor will make sure that your house is completely closed in, with all outside windows and doors in place, for at least a week before your oak hardwood flooring is delivered. This is to make sure that the temperature and relative humidity of your home have stabilized before moisture-sensitive hardwood flooring is delivered. When it's delivered (preferably in small lots), your oak hardwood flooring should be kept in an interior room for five days before it's installed, again to acclimate the wood. Your contractor should check sample boards from each shipment with a hand-held moisture meter to ensure its quality.

Oak hardwood flooring soaks up moisture through its cut ends, so ends should be treated with transparent sealer before installing. Also, oak hardwood flooring should never be installed on top of damp plywood or concrete. Be sure your contractor leaves a 3/4-inch gap at the wall for the wood's expansion (baseboards will cover up this gap).

If you choose to install your new oak hardwood flooring on your own, your local lumber supply store can provide information on this exciting do-it-yourself project.

Remember: Real oak's botanical name includes the word "Quercus," which means "a fine tree" in Latin, according to the American Hardwood Information Center. Fine oak hardwood flooring can bring fine value and beauty to your home.
