As any home owner is aware, any residence can be the target of crime. The possessions in the home as well as the people in the home can be at risk of attack and theft if the home is not properly protected and secured. While home alarm systems with two way voice communication can be expensive, they are often the best defense against potential assaults. However, if you only aim to improve your home’s general level of security then there are some simple improvements you can do to make your home an undesirable target.
While we can not go out and eliminate the criminals, we can reduce the risk our home represents when it comes to falling victim to crime. Try not to be too flashy. Do not keep valuables out in the open for everyone to see and try to shut the garage whenever possible. If anything, play down the amount of money you have and if you are really concerned about being the victim of theft, perhaps that next renovation or paint job can wait until you can afford a watch dog.
Window security is a simple but obvious method to reduce the risk of being a victim of crime. Most windows can be pinned for security. Drill a small hole on a downward slant through the inside window frame and part of the way into the outside frame. Then you can place a nail or a pin through the holes and thereby secure the window. Another method for securing a window is to place a strong piece of wood in the track of the window when it is the closed position and prevent the window from sliding open. An alternative for sliding glass doors and windows which can be lifted out of their tracks with relative ease is to install screws in the upper track that prevent the door or window from being lifted out of place. Also, place a piece of wood tightly into the bottom track to prevent lateral forcing.

Door security is another obvious place to improve security in the home. Keep in mind that locks with key holes in the door knob are not reliable and they can easily be forced. Also, chain locks are very poor security indeed as they can easily be broken or cut. Use a peep hole to see visitors before you open the door. A better option for door security is a deadbolt, at least one inch long. Furthermore, doors should be mounted with the hinge bolts facing inwards, as hinges on the outside of the door can be tampered with or broken. If you have moved or lost your keys, you should change the locks on your house.
