Do you want to improve the security of your home without hiring a security company or wiring your home with a security alarm?  You may not want to surround your family with constant reminders of security and safety as well.  Today modern technology has it so that we can all improve the security in our homes with only a few small upgrades.

First, we all need to remember that there is not a burglar proof home. If someone really wants to enter your home to take your property, they will find a way in.  Our goal is to make the process incredibly difficult in the hope that 99% of the burglars will move on to another home or another location.  Many times people are robbed because their house was simply too easy to get into.  Make the process of breaking into your home as difficult as possible.

Start at your front door and check the lock and deadbolt.  If you do not have a deadbolt, now is the time to install one.  Your locks should be firmly attached to both the door and the door jam.  Also, check your door for damage.  If you see any splitting or holes in your door it needs to be replaced.  You may want to upgrade your door to a
steel-reinforced security door which will increase the protection of your home and your property at least ten fold.

Your front door should be well lit and visible to the street.  If you have bushes or trees blocking the view, you should consider trimming your landscape back.  Look at your yard and think of locations where people can hide.  Can you see the front door from your driveway?  Making sure all your outdoor lights are working and that they project a light that reduces shadows as well, is one of the best and easiest security steps anyone can take.

Next, check your windows.  Your windows should all have the ability to lock and should not be easy to open from the outside.  Take the time to climb a ladder and check each window of your home.  Can you open any of the windows or remove them from the frame?  If so, it is time to replace the windows with modern security windows.  Security windows make it very difficult to open from the outside and many security windows are built with tempered glass which will not shatter when broken.

Finally, look at your sliding glass doors.  Many sliding glass doors are built with a simple sliding lock.  Sliding glass doors are perfect for intruders because the glass will break and they are usually installed in the back of your home, away from the watchful eye of the street.  Step up your sliding glass door by installing a locking device that makes prying open and removing the glass door more difficult.  You may also want to upgrade the sliding glass door to a model created with tempered glass and containing an improved lock.

The benefit of installing new doors and windows is an energy improvement as well.  Many modern security windows are double pane energy efficient windows that can help you bring down your energy bills.  Saving energy is an added bonus to adding an additional level of security to your home.  Adding additional levels of security to your home will protect your family and possessions, but the best security is the idea that we always need to be aware of our surroundings.
