If a laminate countertop buckles or warps then it will have to be replaced. Unfortunately, the entire laminate countertop may... continue reading

All Granite in Your Home Needs To Be Tested for Radon
Because radon cannot be seen, smelled or tasted, the only way to determine its presence is by radon testing. Radon is a naturally occurring gas, and we are all exposed to small amounts of it in our daily lives. This kind of exposure to radiation is known as "incidental exposure" and while it is not considered healthy, it is regarded as dangerous. However, high levels of radon gas in the home leads to a chronic and unsafe level of exposure...continue reading

Radon Found in Granite
another primary source of radon gas in homes and that is granite. Granite is known to contain small amounts of minerals such as uranium that release radon gas as a byproduct over time. Thus, granite countertops and floors could be a contributing cause of high household levels of radon. Although industry organizations such as the Marble Institute of America maintain that the amount of the gas released is negligible, many experts in the environmental building industry disagree and strongly recommend routine testing for all homes, and more frequent testing for homes with granite countertops or floors...continue reading

Cabinets, Cupboards, and Counters
The kitchen cabinets are perhaps the least expensive area of the kitchen that can be improved, but they are very important to the kitchen's function and look. Also, improvements to the cabinets and other dry storage spaces range from simple, such as replacing old cabinet handles, to extravagant such as the incorporation of a new appliance like a dishwasher. Sometimes, simply a new paint job or stain on old cabinetry can be made to benefit a kitchen's value, rather than hurt it...continue reading

Interior Decorating Tips For Kitchens
For most of us, our kitchen interior decoration will have to take into a account a few fixed factors such as the refrigerator, oven and other appliances. Our design should be congruent with the style of our appliances. Therefore, a modern style refrigerator will call for more modern styled counter tops and cabinets, while an older looking appliance would be made to look out of place if all the other elements in the kitchen were in a modern style. Also, when installing cabinets or redesigning the flooring, the needs and limitations... continue reading

Kitchen Appliances
In the kitchen, the appliances are the keystone of the space. One rarely visits the kitchen without using one of the "workhorse" appliances: the refrigerator, the oven, and the sink and dishwasher. To begin with the fridge, this is the appliance that can have the most imposing presence in the kitchen. Since it is so imposing, the effect the kitchen will have on the quality of the room and its impression on buyers will greatly depend on the function and look of the fridge. Modern refrigerators feature ice makers, cold water dispensers, as well as the usual storage spaces and shelves. Freezers are now common in a pull out design...continue reading

Kitchen Cabinet Choices
Stock cabinets are the cabinets that are made prior to purchase. This used to mean that the customer got a basic cabinet without any thrills or individuality. Nowadays, though, that is no longer the case. These cabinets are made to standard industry measurements so that they can fit any typical sized kitchen. Stock cabinets are less expensive and are available much sooner than semi-custom or custom cabinets. Some times you can even walk away from the store with them the same day...continue reading

Kitchen Floors
The floor of the kitchen speaks volumes about the quality of the rest of the home. A kitchen floor with a modern look will inestimably increase the value of even an older residence. When it comes to kitchen floors, the material used can make or break the surface. A carpeted kitchen is a good sign for buyers as it sinks the value of the entire home enormously and yet it can easily be remedied by simply ripping it out to reveal whatever lies underneath. Fortunately, carpeted kitchens are very uncommon...continue reading

Kitchen Cabinet Layout Tips and Advice

The last major thing in the construction of a new home is usually the kitchen. Many people design their home with an architect requesting that he or she put major emphasis on other rooms in the house. This typically causes the architect to leave too little space in his floor plan for an efficiently designed kitchen. Why is it important give the kitchen a higher priority? Because surveys have shown that families spend more time in the kitchen than any other room in their house. I spent several years in the kitchen cabinet business and have heard the complaints over and over. Women repeated the same story when it came time to remodel their kitchen... "We never allowed enough room when we built the house. Is there any way you can help me make more room?"

Ladies, trust me on this one, I am a trained professional. You can't make room where none exists. Cabinets do not provide space, they take up space. Specialty cabinets can be had that help you use some spaces more efficiently (corner lazy susans come to mind), but they can't make up for space not provided in the original construction. A remodel can regain lost space by expanding the kitchen area, but this can be prohibitively expensive. So why don't we just do it right the first time?

I'm going to give you a few tips about kitchen cabinet layout from my experience to help you make better decisions. By giving these tips some due consideration, you will greatly increase the satisfaction you get from this most important room in your house.

Tip 1
If you are fortunate enough to be designing a new home, be sure to allocate sufficient room up front. This is the number one complaint from ladies about their kitchen. The typical husband and wife compete for space priorities in a new home. The husband is often interested in the living room, rec room, or garage while the wife worries about kitchen and bath. So remember, every family member spends more time in the kitchen, even if it is just repeated trips to the refrigerator. I strongly recommend that couples agree up front to provide the necessary space for the kitchen.

Tip 2
Avoid the galley kitchen. This design makes the kitchen one long narrow room with two facing sides. These kitchens require more walking in food preparation and have the nasty habit of causing injuries from dishwasher doors and drawers left open. Every lady I have ever spoken with concerning galley kitchens hate them. These kitchens take their name from naval vessels. They were not invented for home use.

Tip 3
Design in plenty of counter space. Counters have a way of becoming cluttered very quickly. Counter tops are relatively simple to upgrade at a later date, so it is okay to cut corners in the initial design by having laminate tops. This will free up funds for more base cabinets allowing for longer counters. Laminates are also very durable giving you plenty of time to save up for that special granite or quartz top you always wanted.

Tip 4
Select all the cabinets you want for their functionality. Lay them out for the way you want to operate in your kitchen. Give this plenty of thought and draw it out on paper. If you are particularly ambitious in this regard, most semi-custom cabinet companies from the big box stores provide layout tools free of charge. An acceptable job can be done with just a ruler and some graph paper. After you are satisfied with what you have, then build the walls around it. This is certainly not always possible, but it provides for the most satisfactory kitchen. Hand the resulting document to your architect before he does the floor plan.

Tip 5
Compromise sensibly. Everybody who is living in a house needs some level of satisfaction. It is the home of each individual living in it. There also must be sensible compromise regarding expense. One thing my kitchen design experience has taught me is that many contractors will attempt to extract as much money from you as possible early in the process. Kitchen cabinets cannot and should not be installed until the house is almost finished. This means you have to reserve sufficient funds to the end for your dream kitchen.

Tip 6
Talk to professionals. Don't be afraid to express your wishes to design pros. They get paid to listen. Also, don't be afraid to shop competitively for better value. It's your house.

These tips are a good start to a happy kitchen. Kitchen cabinetry is a well developed industry and plenty of help is available. Take advantage of it. Many people get only one chance. Happy designing and happy cooking.

Kitchen cabinet and counter installation tips

You have decided to upgrade your kitchen by installing new cabinets and counter tops. After careful consideration, you have selected and bought them. You are now ready to install. These tips will help you install them efficiently and avoid many of the possible problems.

Before you begin...

Things you will need.
Besides your tools, remember to have these on hand:

  • Several levels of different lengths

  • Shims

  • Paint and replacement flooring, as necessary.

  • Caulk - This can usually be color-matched to your counter top or cabinets.

  • Screws - Make sure you use screws that are made for cabinet installation. Other screws may be too weak and could shear off.

Prepare wall and floor

Now is a good time--while old cabinets are gone and new cabinets are not yet installed--to paint your kitchen. Clean and prime the walls before painting to make sure the paint adheres as well to the surfaces that were previously exposed and those that were covered by cabinets.  This step ensures that there won't be any borders or patches that show up as a slightly different color.

Prepare the floor

Clean the floor carefully, especially at the front of the old cabinet footprint. The new cabinets may have a slightly different footprint from the old ones. If you are planning to change the kitchen floor any time soon, this is a good time to do it.

Measure, mark, and label carefully

"Measure twice and cut once." Locate and mark stud locations. Remember that you need to be able to see the marks after you have moved the cabinets into place. (It can be quite problematic if your friends have hefted that heavy wall cabinet into place and you can't find a stud to attach it to.) Mark with vertical lines that go beyond the upper and lower surfaces of the cabinets, and just in case, keep the stud finder available.

Use masking tape to label each door and drawer with its final location. If the doors and drawers already have identifying labels from the manufacturer, make sure that they are labeled for your convenience. For example, you might change a label of B-1 to left door for upper far right cabinet or left door for cabinet above refrigerator. (When labeling for your own convenience, it is better to be wordy than mysterious.)

Measure walls and floors to see if they are plumb. In most cases, you will be able to wedge shims behind and under the cabinets, but you want to be prepared and have shims available for such a case.

Move the base cabinets into place to make sure that they fit. This also allows you to:

Mark cutouts for electrical outlets, plumbing hookups, etc.

See if any cabinet sits higher than others. (You may need to mark the height of the highest cabinet.)

Cabinet installation tips

Here are some tips for avoiding problems while installing the cabinets. First, decide which cabinets you want to install first: base or wall. There are pros and cons for each.

Installing wall cabinets first (usually recommended)

The base cabinets don't get in the way of the ladder and people lifting the cabinets can stand right under them. (You might bump your head, though, when installing the base cabinets.)

Installing base cabinets first

You can use the base cabinet as a stage for lifting the wall cabinets into place (works best if the counter is installed right away, before wall cabinet installation

Counter top installation tips

Some types of counter tops require professional installation. These tips are for counter tops such as laminate or particle board that can be fairly easily installed by the homeowner. Before starting counter top installation, make sure the base cabinets are level and at the same height. You may have to shim under and behind them.

Test fit the counter top

Even if you ordered or cut it to the size you thought you needed, it might not be an exact fit after the cabinets are installed. If it must fit between two walls, you may have to cut it a little short and caulk the ends after it is installed.  Use a "finish" or "plywood" blade to cut laminate or particleboard counter tops. Cut counter top upside-down to reduce chipping. Seal any cut surfaces before installing just in case the caulking fails to seal.

Be careful when laying out the position of the sink hole. Keep in mind:

  • If the hole is too far forward, the front panel of the cabinet will interfere with the sink installation.

  • If the hole is located too far back, the edge of the sink will hit the backsplash.

  • Cut the sink hole (and any other holes in the counter top from the back side.

Kitchen Cabinets in New York: So Many Choices

Kitchen cabinets can make or break the look of your kitchen, and there are so many choices when it comes to cabinets that even the finickiest person will find cabinets that they love and want to include in their kitchen. The first thing you need to decide is whether you will be using stock, custom, or semi-stock cabinets in your kitchen. There is a big difference between these three types, and the each has advantages and disadvantages. Stock cabinets are mass produced, and they are the least expensive of the three options. These cabinets are created in standard sizes and shapes to fit most kitchen needs, and are somewhat limited in options concerning style, storage, wood type, and design. Semi-custom cabinets are similar to stock cabinets, however these can be customized in limited ways to meet your needs and requirements. There are more finish and size options. These cabinets are more expensive than stock cabinets, and may take a little longer to get. Custom cabinets are the premier top scale cabinets, and they can be costly depending on what you want. They do take longer to be completed though. Custom cabinets are built on site or in a workshop, and they are built completely to your kitchen size and specifications. You can choose any material and size, as well as any finish, interior fittings, and other components.

New York kitchen cabinet options can include many different designs. If you are having custom cabinets built, your choices are almost endless. You can have a lazy Susan installed, design pull out shelves for easy access to pans, put in a wine rack, create an appliance garage where all of your kitchen appliances can be stored and organized neatly, and more. You can add vertical dividers so that there are slots for cookie sheets and other flat pans, build in bins that pull out for storage of potatoes, onions, and other vegetables, add drawers where you want them, and completely customize your kitchen cabinets to fit your unique needs. Small or narrow spaces can become pantry closets for food storage. The possibilities are endless, and if you can imagine it then you can normally include the design in your custom kitchen cabinets.

The wood you choose for your cabinets can really set the tone, and there are many different woods that make gorgeous kitchen cabinets, and are available in New York. Some of these wood types are fairly inexpensive, while others can cost a pretty penny, but they all can help you get the kitchen cabinets you will love. The wood you choose will depend on many factors, including the budget set for your kitchen cabinets, your taste, the decor of your home, the design of your kitchen, and other considerations. Some wood types may be very hard to get, while others can be found anywhere, and this will be reflected in the price you pay for the wood. The most common wood types for kitchen cabinets include Maple, Cherry, Hickory, Oak, Pine, Birch, Poplar, and Sycamore. These wood types can range from cheap to fairly inexpensive, and they make great kitchen cabinets that are durable.

Other types of wood are termed exotic, and you can translate this to mean rare, hard to get, and expensive. These include Mahogany, and this wood is usually harvested from rain forests that are located on the west coast of Africa. Another exotic wood is Ebony, which is really any wood species which has heartwood that is black or extremely dark. Two common types of this exotic wood are Indian ebony wood and African ebony wood. This wood is gorgeous, especially when it is highly polished, but can be somewhat brittle even though it is a strong and dense wood. Walnut is another wood that is considered an exotic. This wood starts out dark brown, and as it ages the wood turns even darker.

The choices for kitchen cabinets if you live in New York are amazing. The kitchen of your dreams can be done on almost any budget. If you are looking to get kitchen cabinets that look great at a great price, the common woods make a great addition. If you want a showpiece kitchen that will astound your friends and family, and you have a large budget and want something unusual that is not seen every day, go with the exotic woods. You can choose from thousands of hardware designs, hundreds of finish and varnish colors and types, and thousands of paint colors to choose from, in addition to the choice of wood.
