Landscaping

Off To The Nursery Picking Plants
The nursery can be intoxicating, with the large number of different plants and flowers making it hard to choose just what you need, instead of buying them all. The first tip is to carefully inspect each individual plant before you buy it. Look for any signs of diseases or fungal growths. Remember, one diseased plant can possibly wipe out all of your greenery in no time, so take extreme care to only bring home plants that are very healthy with no appearance of disease...continue reading

Lawn Care
Now is time to seed the grass, and there are a large variety of grass seeds available. Whether you want emerald green grass so colorful and vibrant or a Kentucky blue grass variety with a dimmer, the seeds should be chosen for your location and weather types. Each grass seed has a specific zone where it will grow best, so choose from grass seeds that thrive in your area. Once you have decided on the grass and purchased the seed, spread it evenly across the yard, using eight pounds...continue reading

Landscaping Tips For Fall
As far as spring garden preparations go, now is the time that you'll want to get moving on the things that need to be done so that you can enjoy an easy transition into the next planting season. One of the first things that you should look after is dividing up those overgrown perennials now. Not only will this make for a quicker bloom when the time comes back around, but there will be a healthier bloom as well...continue reading

Paved Slabs and Landscaping
Any portion of the lot that is paved over concrete or asphalt is a critical aspect of the landscaping that will affect how the water flows and drains either off the roof or running away from the house.  It's important to remember here that when you lose any area of grass turf as part of the drainage, you lose that area's ability to absorb at lease one inch of rain. This depends on the type of soil. But because there is no absorption...continue reading

Planning Your Landscaping Project
Draw your idea out on paper and be both specific and realistic. You can't dream away that gigantic oak tree in the middle of the yard, so work around it. If you live in an ecosystem that gets a lot of rain, don't plan on cactus, and if you live in a desert, don't plan alot of vegetation. Take into consideration how much sun your yard gets and which parts get more and less sun. Be aware of the drainage in your yard...continue reading

Installing Outdoor Lighting Fixtures
These systems are very simple to install and enjoy, as most will connect to the existing outdoor receptacle that you've already got with no bother or fuss. Remember that these low voltage cables really present no electrical hazard although they should be protected from accidental cutting and/or splitting. It's a good idea to run it through a plastic conduit where it is exposed for example across siding or decking. It's always best...continue reading

The different faces of Landscaping
There are many types of landscaping. Drought resistant landscaping is also termed as xeriscaping, and is an approach that uses minimal amounts of water and yet maintains the look of a traditional garden. Permeable Landscaping is that which allows water and air to penetrate the soil, and is part of the sewer system for storm water. Natural landscaping is an opportunity to reestablish diverse native plants, thereby inviting the birds and butterflies back home. Edible landscaping...continue reading

Improve the appearance of your home
Landscapers must have a trailer or a truck for picking up and delivering landscaping tools and materials such as plants, rocks, boulders, lumber, etc.  Landscape design includes both plants and construction materials. Two general categories of materials needed to be considered when planning a landscape are plant materials, commonly referred to as softscape, which consist primarily of trees and shrubs, and structural materials, also known as hardscape, which include paving, fences and walls...continue reading

Retaining Walls
One of the big reasons for a retaining wall comes when you live in a part of the country where the ground is not level. People who live around mountains and such are quite familiar with the need for these retaining walls. And this isn't something new in construction that's just come about with our modern times either. Retaining walls have been used for thousands of years and were even used in Roman times when they used this type of construction to build their roads...continue reading

The Art of Landscaping

When it comes to your yard, you want it to be beautiful and appealing to everyone who sees it. Landscaping can make this happen, but if you are like a lot of homeowners you may not be sure what to do or where to start. Landscaping is an art, like interior design, painting, and other creative processes, and you may want to hire a landscape company if you are not the creative type or do not want to have to deal with the small details. If you are going to landscape your yard on your own without professional help, there are some things that you need to think about before you even start looking for plants and materials. Some factors that need to be examined are the natural weather patterns in your area, your soil and temperature conditions, the geography of your yard, the types of plants you enjoy the most, and which flowers, plants, and trees will look best during every season of the year. The ideal landscaping project will include plants and flowers that are active for every season. Choose some plants that thrive in each of the four seasons, and plant them so that no matter what season it is your yard looks fabulous.

Draw up a plan before you even visit the nursery. Accurately measure your yard, and determine what you want the completed landscaping project to look like. Do you want any fruit or decorative trees like weeping willows? Where should they be located ideally? Do you want flowers, decorative plants, or both in your yard? If possible, sketch out the yard and how you want it to look. These plans and sketches will help you determine the ideal plants, trees, and flowers to include for your landscaping project. Consider things like shade and areas which receive sun all day long. These areas may pose special challenges and require specific plants that thrive in these spaces. If you do not look at all of these factors you may end up spending a lot of money and time just to have your landscaping die off and make your home unattractive.

One fantastic landscaping idea, which is really beneficial in western areas where water can be scarce at times, is to use rocks and create a rock garden out of your yard. You can add a pond or pool, and plant many plants which thrive in hot dry environments. This can include cactus and other desert plants. This landscaping plan uses a minimum of water, and the pond or pool can recycle so that they are very efficient.

Plants do not have to include flowers to add beauty and lushness to your yard. There are many plants that are prized for their beautiful leaves that do not flower. Hostas are one plant variety that has lush gorgeous green leaves which are large and shiny. Ferns are another plant that do not require much care and maintenance, but which add a lot to your yard. Trees can be planted for a number of reasons. After a few years, trees can add shade to your yard. Fruit trees offer several benefits, because they flower in the spring or summer and offer fruit that is edible in the fall usually.

Flowers can add a lot of color and pizazz to your home and yard. It is important to consider all the seasons when deciding on where to plant which flowers. Some plants can be planted in bulbs in the Fall and will flower the next year. Tulips, irises, lilies, and daffodils will all grow year after year with just a little care and effort. Maybe you enjoy roses, and want your own personal rose garden. This can be done very easily. Simply determine how many rose varieties you want to include, the total number of desired plants, and how big you want the finished garden to be. You can add as many types of roses as you want, for a rainbow of roses throughout most seasons.

Landscaping is an art, but this does not mean you can not do this project yourself with a little thought and planning before you start. Your yard is the first thing that visitors to your home will see, and the only thing people in your neighborhood will notice. You can have a gorgeous yard that is full of plants and flowers that will make your home really stand out and be noticed. No matter how big or small your budget is, you can landscape your yard and give it a whole new appeal with a little planning and effort.
