Popular Paint Options in New York, NY

Does your home need new paint? Many times a new paint job can completely liven up a room and give it a whole new look and appeal. There are a number of different options when it comes to paint, so that you can give a room the look and style you want without having to spend large amounts of time and aggravation. There are so many choices when it comes to paint colors, finishes, and styles that you will be astounded. No matter what look you want or what function the room has, there is a perfect paint product and technique that can really make your home interior stand out and be remembered.

The first thing you need to decide is the color you want. There are a rainbow of colors to choose from and if you can not find one that you like you can always have a custom color created for you. You can choose one color or many… the choice is yours, depending on what look you are trying to create.

The finish of the paint is the first consideration you should have when deciding to paint a room or the entire home interior. There are a number of interior paint finishes, and each one has advantages and drawbacks, and intended uses. These finishes can include matte finish, flat enamel, eggshell finish, satin finish, semi-gloss, and gloss. There are also specialty paints that may contain materials which create both a finish and a technique.

A matte finish is flat, and does not shine or gloss at all. This paint
can be easily removed by wiping at the wall, so this finish is not a good option if you have small children or a lifestyle which would mean wiping dirt and smudges off of the walls frequently. Flat enamel paint is similar to matte finish paint, but the flat enamel is more durable and can not be wiped off as easily. If you choose paint which has an eggshell finish, this paint will have a faint sheen and can be cleaned without harming or removing the paint. This paint finish will reflect a small amount of light.

Some
paints will have a satin finish, and this paint has a higher gloss than any of the previous paints. Satin paints look smooth like velvet, and are frequently seen on the doors and windows. This paint can stand up to even light scrubbing to remove dirt and smudges, so it is a good choice anywhere in your home where there may be a lot of traffic in and out. A semi-gloss paint finish is used as accent paint, though it can be used for the walls as well if you want a nice shine and a slightly glossy look. With semi gloss and gloss paints, it is important that the preparation of the walls is done correctly and without any flaws, because any paint that has a glossy look will reflect light, and any flaws may become very visible and apparent. Gloss finish paints are the ones which have a very high gloss and really shine. Painting an entire room with this paint finish may be too much reflection, and may cause a glare in your room which is unpleasant.

The finish of the paint is not the only important decision. The application and techniques used to apply the paint is also important. There are a number of ways that you can use paint to make your rooms original and extremely attractive.
Color-washing can help give the room a soft warm glow. This technique uses two or three shades which compliment each other. The base coat is applied, and then once dry a second color is randomly and lightly applied to the wall. You can pat or feather the strokes with a paper towel or fabric to add the illusion of depth and give the wall a creative appearance. This technique can be used with a third color as well if you are looking to use three shades.

Combing is another popular technique used with paint to create a decorative and attractive appearance on your walls. Apply a base coat of the desired color to your wall and let it dry. Once the wall is dry, apply a second coat of paint or paint and glaze mix of a different color on a three foot section. Take a clean comb and use it
to pull through the second coat of paint, leaving raised ridges on the wall. You can make vertical, horizontal, or zigzag lines, depending on your personal preferences. The best visual effect is best if the two paint colors are light and dark, instead of two colors which are close. The effect is more dramatic and eye catching. Crackling is a painting finish technique that can make your paint look distressed, but in a very charming way. This technique uses two or three different colors, and is applied to look like peeling paint which shows the layer underneath. When applied correctly this technique can give your room an exquisite look. Sponging is a fairly easy technique that can create an interesting pattern in the paint simply by blotting the wet paint with a dry sponge.

For the best results and look for your painted home interior, consider a professional painter to do the job. This will allow you to have the job professionally done, so there are no flaws or mistakes to mar the finished appearance of your paint. This also means a lot less work and hassle for you, because the painter will take care of everything. You simply specify the colors, finish, and look you want and the painter will do the rest.

Why Should I Paint My House
in Brooklyn, Queens or Manhattan?

Have you noticed lately that your home is getting drab and run down looking because of the appearance of the exterior? Do you want to give the outside of your home a whole new look and style but you are not sure you can afford it because of the tough economic times all around the globe? You can make your home look like new without having to break your budget or spend a lot to replace different types of exterior home finishes. A lot of homes have siding, whether it is metal or vinyl, and this can be very expensive to replace. You have the cost of the materials, which can be pricey especially if you have the older metal siding on your home. In addition to the materials cost, you have to figure in the cost of labor to install or apply the new exterior finish, and this is where the costs can really add up. It can take a few days to refinish your home’s exterior at the very minimum, depending on the size of your home, and this means paying for a crew for two or three days at least. A better option if money is tight right now and you really can not afford to replace the exterior finishing on your home, but you want to make your home look nice instead of old and run down, is to paint the existing finish.

No matter what type of finish you have on the outside of your home, the right preparation and a
few coats of paint will fix your home up as good as new, and give it back appeal. If your home has vinyl siding, you need to be careful and choose the right type of paint, one that is intended for this type of material. Vinyl siding has many challenges when it comes to painting, because many exterior paints will peel off the vinyl in a short period of time. Choose paints that have urethane, and this should be stated right on the can. These paints work so well that many carry a warranty when used on vinyl siding as long as you follow the instructions exactly. Before you start to paint, make sure to power wash the entire exterior of your home to remove all dirt and debris. After this is done, use soapy rags and sponges to scrub all the siding completely. Power wash equipment is great for removing large amounts of dirt and grime, but it is no substitute for a good hard scrubbing with a rag or sponge. This will give the finished paint a smooth appearance with no lumps, and help the paint adhere to the siding. Be careful not to use dark colors, because vinyl heats up and may distort or buckle up and disrupt the paint if you use darker colors.

You can also use paint to really brighten and liven up a brick exterior finish. Many people think that brick can not be painted but this is not true. Just like with vinyl siding, the key to a terrific paint job on a brick exterior is in the preparation and the paint that you use.  Brick and stone finishes can experience a condition called efflorescence, which is a result of mineral salts in the material and can cause white stains. These stains
may be very difficult to remove, but if left they can interfere with the adhesion of the paint to the brick. A wire scrub brush may remove these stains, or an application of a weak muriatic acid solution. If these steps do not work then you may want to seek professional advice. Once this staining is removed, you must go over every brick. If there are any cracks, widen them. Use a brush and a small vacuum or vacuum hose to eliminate all dust in the cracks and on the bricks. This dust can prevent the paint and caulk from sticking properly. Now use either silicone or acrylic caulk, so there are no gaps or missing areas present. If you notice any mildew, use a light bleach solution to clean it up and remove it. Now you can use a latex primer which is high quality to give the entire exterior a primer coat. This will allow the finished paint to have an even look instead of appearing splotchy. Make sure the primer can be used with brick and other masonry finishes.

Elastomeric paint is a great paint to use on
exterior brick finishes that are being painted. This special paint is very rubbery and dense, and has a higher than normal content of acrylic. This paint is very water repellent, and using it will help you create a moisture barrier between the paint and your home’s exterior. Because this paint has an elasticity of around three hundred percent, it will actually fill in cracks as long as they are no more than one eighth of an inch deep or wide. Just because you have a brick home this does not mean you can not use paint to give the exterior a facelift, and make it look new an attractive again.

Stucco is another exterior finish that can be
painted, but this finish can require special methods. Because stucco is often sprayed on and can have a raised texture, it is not always possible to use a paint brush or roller to apply the paint. Instead, in these cases it must be sprayed on, which requires specialized equipment and skill. If you have stucco on the outside of your home and you want to paint it, at least seek professional advice even if you do not want to hire a professional to do the work.

You can use two or three colors on the outside of your home to ad depth and character, and really make it stand out. One way to do this is to
paint your entire home one color, and then use a contrasting color on the trim, windows, doors, and other accessories. This can add charm and style to any home, and make you proud to call it your own. If you want to make your house look better by painting it, consider using a professional painter. This may be the way to get the fastest and best results, and the cost is usually very reasonable.

Staten Island... Attain Your Visual Dreams With An Experienced Painter

Having a vision of what you want your home to look like when repainting and making that dream a reality are sometimes difficult to achieve. What looks great in a magazine or in a picture doesn’t always translate to the best look for your home. So how do you go about creating that new color scheme without going from bad to worse? It takes some planning, research and most of all an experienced painter who is skillful about the use of color so that you can accomplish what you are trying to achieve.

Whether you are
painting both the inside or outside – or one or the other – it is important to look at what you currently have and ask yourself these questions:

  • Look at the type of home you have – is it old or in a certain period such as Victorian or is it more modern or somewhere in between?

  • What types if furnishings do you have? What color schemes? For example, do you have a red sofa or a more subdued beige one?

  • What features do you want to emphasize?  For example, you can use a contrast color for moldings or doors or if you have a dramatic view you want to draw people’s attention to it subtly with the trim of the window standing out like a picture frame.

  • Lighter colors will make a room look larger and can accent a mantle that projects outward, however dark colors are used for drama and to accent recesses so think about which areas you want to accent.

  • Staying with the same color family rather than a contrasting color is a subtle way to accent moldings or other trims without detracting from it.

  • Look for things that you do not want to paint such as railings or steps or doors and ensure that whatever color scheme you decide on takes that in to consideration.

  • Choose two or three basic colors rather than a rainbow of colors that can be overwhelming and use accents in the same color tones or families to keep it simple.

Darker colors can add drama but they can also fade and be harder to touch up later on, but on the plus side they do not show stains or dust as much and they do offer some drama. Color swatches can be deceiving so they should be seen in sunlight and can look different once applied to a large wall or surface so you might want to look at several shades darker to ensure you get the right color.

If you are having difficulty coming up with the right color scheme, look outside at the color in the landscaping and the trees and flowers.  If you live near the beach you will get a different palette altogether that will be inspired by the water and the sand or the harbor and its boats. Your neighborhood can also be inspiring. If you live in the country, you might want earth tones, but if you live in a Victorian in San Francisco or a beach cottage by the shore you can be a little more colorful outside as well as inside.

If you live in a historical house then you should look at trying to emulate the look of that particular era with a fresh look that still retains its charm from the past. You can recreate the look by analyzing old paint and may be able to find historic color charts that might be helpful in attaining the accuracy of the period. An experienced professional painter or interior designer may be able to help you with this.

If you have a new home that has been “stamped” out in a community and lacks an inspirational look of its own, then take away that drab white that dominates throughout the house and add splashes of color that will not only brighten it up but make it stand out in the crowd. Painting kitchen cabinets or the door and moldings of a living room or bedroom can make a huge difference that is not difficult to do. Adding color to one wall of a room can also make a dramatic display that will add warmth and yet not overwhelm you.

If you want to inspire warmth in a room, you can go for the red or rose tones that will create a cozy and comfortable den or bedroom. For a dining room, colors that stimulate appetites are peach or coral while an office will benefit from yellows and gold. Calming colors include blue, purple or green and they work well in bedrooms or any room where you go to relax. Paler shades are restful, medium greens are refreshing and deeper greens will add comfort. Brighter lime or yellow will energize and wake you up.

Browns, grays, white or beige are neutral and are what are generally seen in homes because they will “go with anything” and blend in but they do not bring out moods the way other colors can. Orange, red or bright yellow are cheerful and inspiring while blue and purple will enhance serenity and daydreams.

Painting the outside of the house can really jazz it up and brighten up the neighborhood although you should always be mindful of your neighbors when choosing your color – especially if you decide to be more daring and razzle dazzle the street with too much color! It is however an opportunity to emphasize architectural details and can make a dramatic difference in the look.

All of your dream visions can be realized simply by finding a professional painter who is skillful and extremely knowledgeable in the nuances of color as well as the type of architecture or home that you have – especially if you have a historic home or a particular type that demands a little more research other than just painting a few walls. Once you find that professional, you are on your way to realizing your dream color scheme and will no doubt be thrilled with the dramatic results.

New Paint Is An Affordable Yet Effective
Renovation Project for and New Yorker

A new coat of paint can make a world of difference and brighten your household considerably and the best part is that it can be done inexpensively without putting a huge dent in your budget.  It will give your home a fresh look and enhance your surroundings. Painting is something that is not difficult to do, but it is important to do it right so that you can obtain the results you are looking for.

Whether you want to paint one room or the whole house, you need to prepare the walls or other surfaces for the paint to ensure that you achieve the maximum effect. This means that you need to fill in any holes or cracks and scrape off any loose paint. It is essential to get all the flaking or peeling paint removed before you start. If you have mildew present you need to use a solution of one pint of bleach per gallon of water to kill the mildew and remove the stains otherwise it will continue to grow under the
new paint. If there are water stains you must use shellac to seal the stain, otherwise a latex paint will not cover it no matter how many coats of paint you apply. Once this is accomplished you then need to clean the surfaces with a tri-sodium phosphate solution that is easy to use.

You can save money on lots of the materials and by doing the painting yourself, but it is essential to use a good quality of paint because no amount of preparation will make up for a poor grade of paint that will fade or need retouching within a few years. It is better to pay for a medium or high grade of paint that has more pigments and resins and less water than the cheaper types. It will pay off long-term and give you better coverage for more square feet per gallon and will last much longer.

Enamels work best in kitchens and bathrooms where there is more traffic and the walls will be cleaned more often and they offer a range of finishes that include semi-gloss and satin. Flat finishes are usually 100% acrylic formulations that should be used in bedrooms, dining rooms or living areas as they are very durable and touch up well. Once you have selected your paint for each room and prepared the walls, you can make the other preparations necessary before you start the actual painting. There are paints that are made especially for window trim, sills and doors so that they will last a long time although they get a lot of use.

The first lesson to learn about
painting is that it is better to cover up – rather than clean up! This applies to windows, wall fixtures and chandeliers that might get splattered while the paint is being applied. Some tips for preparing the room for its coat of paint include:

  • Cover windows or mirrors and other glass surfaces with newspaper that is attached with masking tape around the edges.

  • Use drop cloths anywhere and everywhere to protect flooring and soak up splattered paint – the best are canvas but 3-mil plastic will work well too and cost less.

  • Use newspapers to form paths throughout work area so that you don’t track paint.

  • It is better to remove electrical switch plates if possible rather than covering them with masking tape but use that if the plate cannot be removed for some reason.  Avoid any exposed wires however.

  • Use plastic garbage bags to cover light fixtures or chandeliers or door knobs.

  • A power roller can be rented to speed up the painting of large wall surfaces.

Other supplies that are needed include brushes and rollers that are of

good quality and should take into consideration the types of surfaces

to be painted and those needed for large surfaces and smaller ones

for trim. Nylon brushes are best for latex and can be used for solvent

borne paints although a hog bristle brush is better for these paints.

Quality covers for the rollers will pay off in the end. You will also need

wall scrapers, spackling compound, putty knives, a caulking gun, a

pail and roller grid along with a ladder and basic hand tools such as

screwdrivers and hammers. Once you have prepared the rooms and

purchased all the paint and materials necessary, it is time to begin!

To make the job easier it is best to take things one step at a time

and go slowly but methodically so that you ensure that you do a good

job and don’t end up with more of a mess than you anticipated. While

you are in the middle of actually painting here are some further tips to

keep it simple:

  • When you are finished for the day, put paint tools and trays inside a plastic garbage bags and brushes inside plastic sandwich bags to keep them from drying out and to help them retain their shape.

  • Line a roller tray with a plastic garbage bag to ensure easy clean up.

  • Use a roller screen on the roller tray to prevent the roller from slipping.

  • For brush clean up use a bronze wire barbeque brush to comb out the bristles after you have washed the brush.

  • Clean rollers by rolling excess paint onto a scrap gypsum board then direct a hose nozzle into the roller so it spins itself clean.

  • Salad oil will clean your hands free of oil-based paints, varnishes or urethanes that are considered solvent borne paints.

  • Use gallon paint cans rather than quart or smaller sized cans that will spill more easily or tip over.

While you don’t want to have a lot of paint left over, you can usually

estimate that most gallons of paint will cover approximately 400

square feet. You need to also factor in the type of method being used

– roller or brush applications will have about 10% waste, while airless

sprayers have 20% waste and air sprayers have 40%.
