Packing Up Your Home For The Move Like A Professional
If you are moving, you are probably like most people and dread the thought of packing up your home. The stagnant economy and record numbers of lay offs and plant closings means that more people are moving on their own without the help of professional movers. Do not get me wrong, I have moved both ways and the professional movers normally earn every penny of their fee and...continue reading

Long Distance Moving Planner
Planning a long-distance move (i.e., moving to a home in another state, or perhaps just the other side of the same state) involves many of the same processes as a short move. However, there are numerous extra challenges associated with the move as well.  To make the long-distance move as smooth as possible, you will need to prepare a detailed plan in writing before the actual trip ever begins...continue reading

An Organized Move
The key, I believe, is to plan as far in advance as possible and to start packing as far in advance as possible. Make a list of the things you need to do, including calling the phone, cable, and electric company, and going to the post office to fill out a "change of address" form. These are simple and free, and you can drop them off right there in the post office before you leave...continue reading

It's Best To Be Organized
Speaking of paperwork-- you don't want to arrive at your new home only to find that the important paperwork, the ones that contain all the necessary information to steal your identity, are gone. Again, this applies to both those who are hiring movers and those who are doing the work themselves. If possible, keep the information with you at all times. And by "with you" I mean either in your hand or within your sights...continue reading

Reducing The Stress of Moving
We are all guilty of holding on to that ugly set of dishes that are stored in the back of the cabinets, the old clothes that don't fit or should be burned in the name of decency, and the odds and ends we hold on to "just in case" we need it again one day. Moving is the perfect excuse to rid yourself of the extra baggage. Give the stuff you don't want or need anymore to charity (some even offer free pick up...continue reading

Moving Made Easy
Moving is traumatic, to children who feel scared and uncertain about change and the more their lives are changing, the tighter they'll hold on to the things they can. Often associated with retirement and with precipitating shocks like the death of a spouse or by other changes in marital status; moving is ranked as one of life's most stressful events. When moving is brought about by a death, divorce...continue reading

Hiring A Mover
One of the most important of these is the idea of a binding estimate. These generally clearly describe all the shipment and other services provided. It's important to remember two things here--that once you've signed a binding estimate you can't be required to pay any more than the amount stated, and that you are responsible for paying the binding estimate by cash, certified check, or money order...continue reading

Tips for Moving
One of the biggest considerations is of course the expense. And of the biggest expenses, beyond the moving company, is the materials that you decide on to package your belongings. Tips for the Local Moving Planner

Are you looking to move? Have you cleared the fog out of your brain enough to remember what needs to be done? In case the whole task is beginning to overwhelm you, here are some helpful tips on what to do. If you have the internet they have free moving planners online that will help you out through all the steps. Many will remind you of steps that you may have forgotten or just overlooked as not important. But if you not do not, don't worry: We can go through the steps here. The following goes in detail about how to change your mailing address, finding and securing moving trucks, finding appropriate storage places, latching onto supplies that may be needed, what to do about your utilities, the packing process, when to know you're finished, and so on.

First of all, in all of the hubbub of the move, you must not forget to change your mailing address. This is a simple matter -- something you can do at any post office. Or if even a trip to the post office is too much effort, you can also order the change of  address form online. This is free as well.

Next you want to pre-screen  the options available to you with moving companies.  Make sure the mover that you select does what you need them to do, such as long or short distance moving. Look at the cost each one charges as well as insurance they have (in case something is broken or lost).

If you prefer to save the cost of hiring a mover, you could do it yourself. Look into prices of renting a truck to help you avoid stress -- and too many trips. Just remember the more you load in one trip, the fewer trips you'll need to take. So think about what size truck would be best for this job. Then research the prices of the companies around your area and decide what would fit your budget. Also, research the available storage places (if you need one).

Now that you've figured out the early essentials, its time to have your utilities switched over to your new home. For this, you can make the call a week or two ahead of time -- as long as you stress to the person on the phone the exact date that the transition should take place. Make sure they understand the date (Ask them to repeat it to you), or else you might find yourself without power two or three days ahead of your actual move!

Before you start the packing process, first go through your home and see if there are some things you can discard; this will help you lighten your moving load, and help you avoid creating an early clutter the first day you're in the new house. Think about your new house: Are there any things that your old house has that are lacking in the new home which you find absolutely essential? Make plans to locate those things a few days before the move. Also, make a list of larger objects that are going or not going to your new home. Make arrangements for the things you do not want, to be picked up and discarded (or donated to someone who could use them). You may also need to make arrangements to have the larger objects in your yard and house moved. You may also need to shop for an experienced home remodeling company for all your upcoming home renovation projects in your new place of residence.

Now we come to the fun stuff: packing. Find boxes and packing supplies that you anticipate needed. Estimate how many boxes you may need and what supplies you might need ( bubble wrap, peanuts, or newspaper). Boxes you can often get by going to local supermarkets and asking. Newspapers are also fairly easy to obtain.  Just ask your friends and family if they have any old newspapers lying around. Most will have plenty that they're dying to get rid of anyway.  Packing tape you'll probably need to get at a local office-supply store.  That's also a good place to get bubble wrap or packing peanuts, if you decide the newspaper is not sufficient.

After you get the supplies, it's time to pack! Pack things in an organized way, and according to the rooms where they will go. The well-organized packer will have living-room boxes, bedroom boxes, kitchen boxes, etc. This will make it easier when you are unloading the boxes. You will know what room it belongs in.

Once you have moved to your new home and unpacked, the work is not done yet. Now you want to inform friends and family that you have moved. Greeting cards are great for this part of the process. You also might want to think about having a contractor for home renovations or an inspector for a home inspection to come out and take a look at your new home. This way, you can get a heads-up on any problems your new home might have -- or perhaps he can give you advance warning of things that might need to repaired soon. And remember, an inspection is an absolute "must" to ensure safety.

Take some time to look around the town (if new to you) find out what school district you're in, where are the shopping malls and grocery stores, where is the nearest gym, and so on.

Now that the work is over its time to meet your neighbors. Meeting them lets you know who is living by you. This doesn't  mean you have to be friends, but being friendly makes it more likely that they'll watch out for your home in case of prowlers. And you, of course, should do the same for them.

Finally it's time to relax. Now that you've gone through the process outlined in this short checklist, you can see all that is needed for your big move: how to change your mailing address, getting moving trucks, storage places, supplies that may be needed, changing your utilities to the new location, the packing, exploring the neighborhood and meeting your neighbors. Now get started -- and enjoy the move!
