Radon

Big Focus on Radon
The maximum recommended radon limit is 4 picoCuries per liter (pCi/L).  That means if your house tests at 4 pCi/L or higher you will definitely want to take repairative action.  And while the EPA has strongly recommended that people whose homes test at 4 pCi/L or higher seek mitigation for their homes, they have even encouraged people  whose homes test at 2 pCi/L to look into repairative measures...continue reading

Radon: A Faceless Killer
Radon is not visible, has no odor, and by the time the effects manifest themselves in a person it is likely that significant lung damage has already occurred.  Radon permeates into buildings from the ground.  As warm air rises, it creates a vacuum causing continuous intake of the gases it contains.  It wafts in through the tiniest of spaces and could seep through small cracks in the foundation, around pipes, sump pumps and drains, and even through walls and floorboards...continue reading

Radon: An Extreme Cancer Risk That Should Be Tested For
Testing for radon gas can be done using two different methods, short term testing and long term testing. Short term testing can be done for between two days and three months, and will tell you whether there are dangerously high radon gas levels in your home currently. Long term testing will help you determine what the average yearly radon exposure level is, because this gas will fluctuate depending on the day, season, and other factors...continue reading

Environmental Issues with Foreclosures
Buying foreclosed properties is not without its risks, but with some foresight and proper planning, risks can be greatly minimized and there is an opportunity for profit. One of the biggest mistakes that foreclosure investors and homebuyers make is buying a property with minimal to no knowledge of the condition of the home. This can lead to costly repairs or replacements further down the road, and there may also be environmental issues with foreclosures...continue reading

Radon in New York
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) maintains that there is no safe threshold of radon exposure. However, they have established a point, which for testing purposes, indicates hazardous conditions. Any number over 4 pico-curies (unit measurement of radiation) per liter of air is considered dangerous. The EPA designates every county in the nation as belonging to one of three "zones" which describes the likelihood of the presence of dangerous levels of radon...continue reading

Radon in New Jersey
Aside from soil, there are two other sources of radon: building materials themselves, and ground water. When ground water is contaminated by radon via the soil, it can enter your home by simply turning on a faucet because at this time small amounts of radon gas are released into the air of your home. Although this is not a significant amount of gas, it contributes to the problem. There are some building materials (granite in particular) that can release radon...continue reading

Radon Testing Kit
If you prefer to leave the testing to the professionals, there are many home inspection companies that offer radon testing. Although it costs a bit more than doing the testing on your own, you can be certain that you have obtained an accurate reading and you will be able to address any concerns that you have with a professional inspector. Additionally, if the radon inspection concludes high radon levels, a home inspector can advise you on corrective actions to reduce radon exposure in your home...continue reading

All Granite in Your Home Needs To Be Tested for Radon
The good news, however, is that home testing kits are readily available and they are simple to use. The most inexpensive type of home test is the passive activated charcoal test. A small bag or box that is filled with charcoal is placed in the living space and left for a specified amount of time. During this period, the charcoal absorbs gases in the room that can later be analyzed to obtain a radon level. Radon detectors that function in the same way as a carbon monoxide detector can also be used. They are quite a bit more expensive than the simpler counterparts but do provide...continue reading

Radon Found in Granite
Every home, new or old, is susceptible to this problem regardless of geographic location. Radon comes primarily from soil and rocks as the minerals in them decay. The gas can then enter homes from the lowest levels, via cracks or gaps in the foundation or through crawlspaces. Once the gas gets inside of a home, it becomes trapped and builds up higher concentrations. Newer homes are particularly at risk, as improved insulation actually prevents the gas from escaping your home...continue reading

Radon Testing
Ironically, newer built homes are more likely to have elevated levels of radon than older homes. This is because improvements in home building techniques create an environment that fosters the concentration of radon within living spaces. Older homes are less insulated and less "air tight", which allows gasses and chemicals to escape more easily. Conversely, new homes, designed for optimal energy efficiency, are more insulated with more tightly sealed doors and windows...continue reading

Radon Test
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states that there is no acceptable, "safe" level of radon gas, rather the less exposure to radon, the better. However, any measurement of more than 4 pCi/L (pico-curies per liter of air) is cause for serious concern. This amount of radon has 35 times the radiation of The Nuclear Regulatory Commission's allowable radiation exposure for citizens in the vicinity of a radioactive site...continue reading

Radon Gas Test
Because radon originates in soil and rocks, it can leak into homes in a variety of ways; through cracks in the foundation or low-level windows, or even through contaminated well water. Some building materials, particularly granite, also release radon, though these amounts are minute. Radon is a "heavy" gas, which means that it tends to concentrate at lower levels...continue reading

An Understanding of Radon Testing
Radon can get into well water, and gets released into the air when you shower and use water for other household chores. According to radon tests, drinking radon infused water is far less risky than breathing it in, but it still puts you and your family at risk. There are water tests available, and if you find radon in your water, there are two options...continue reading

Radon - New Building Techniques That Help You Fight Back
On top of this layer, there is a plastic sheeting that the experts recommend next. This is often placed on top of the gas permeable layer and under the slab at the same time to prevent any of the gases like radon from entering the home. Where the home has a crawlspace, this type of covering is placed over the floor there to prevent gas contamination...continue reading

The Geologist's Radon
Still, these scientists concede that radon packs a terribly lethal dose of radioactivity and by its very nature it can drift like an invisible smoke. All that it needs is a crack or opening so that it can escape. And that's where the homeowner's problems start. Still having rocks filled with uranium is not enough to start the process in motion that sets free these gases. The rocks must have cracks as well. Following that logic, it's easy to see why... continue reading

Radon and Cancer
The EPA suggests that all homes be tested and that you choose either a kit or professional that is certified by either the National Environmental Health Association or the National Radon Safety Board. Radon Precautions
If you are concerned about radon gas in a space you already own, there are some simple precautions you can take to protect yourself and your loved ones. First, seal and caulk any cracks in the basement floor and walls. Even painting the basement floor can be a way to eliminate entry points for radon. Since the gas is often released by an underground source, a sealed basement goes a long way to protecting yourself from negative effects...continue reading

Radon Facts And Information

Radon is a very serious danger, because this invisible odorless gas can build up in your home and cause health problems. Radon causes lung cancer, and this is a proven scientific fact, whether you smoke or not. Smokers are more likely to get lung cancer if they are also exposed to Radon, but even non-smokers can get lung cancer from this hidden health hazard. This gas is present in the ground, and rises up in the soil into the air in your home.

Because of the high health risks this gas poses, many new homes are being built using Radon resistant construction. This method of construction allows builders to use technology and direct Radon gas in the ground around the home instead of through the home. Radon resistant construction should include some basic methods and techniques, even though each builder will go about the process differently and may use just one or all of the available methods. One basic technique is to include a gas permeable layer under the home. The gas permeable layer will lay underneath the floor or slab of your home or basement, and it will allow Radon to move around underneath the home. This layer is commonly made from gravel which is four inches thick. This layer is then covered with plastic sheeting, before the slab or floor is laid down. The plastic layer helps prevent Radon from getting into the basement and the air in the home. Plastic is also used to create a layer of protection in any crawl spaces. Another method that can be used in Radon resistant construction is to seal and caulk any openings in the concrete floor and foundation. This stops Radon from getting into the home as well. A vent pipe can also be run from the gas permeable layer through the house and out of the roof. This allows the Radon to be harmlessly vented out of the ground without entering the house. The pipe should have a three to four inch diameter and be PVC that is sealed or another type of gas pipe that will not leak the gas into your home. This pipe not only releases Radon but also other soil gases that could build up under your home. One other technique that is commonly used in Radon resistant construction is a junction box installation. While the home is under construction, an electrical junction box will be installed, so that a venting fan can be installed right then or later on in the future.

Even if your home was built using Radon resistant construction, Radon testing should be done at least once a year. This gas can have deadly consequences if you or your family are exposed, so making sure Radon levels are regularly measured is critical. Testing can be done in two basic ways, short term testing and long term testing. Short term testing is done using a testing device which will remain in your home from two days to ninety days. The testing device used can be charcoal canisters, an electret ion chamber, an alpha track, or other device. The level of Radon in the ground and in your home will vary, depending on the time of day and year. For this reason, many people do a long term test as well as a short term test, to determine the yearly average for this gas. If a short term test has results which show 4 pCi/L or more, a second short term test and a long term test should be done because this level can have serious health consequences. Testing for Radon only takes a little effort, but the results can literally save your life. While testing for this gas, keep your windows and doors closed as much as possible to determine the actual Radon level in the air inside your home. Long term radon testing devices may stay in your home for up to a year, and these devices can show you the actual levels of the gas through the time period, allowing you to reach a yearly Radon average. If the long term testing results show dangerous levels of Radon, you must have the home fixed. Even if the results are okay, you should test your home again at least once every year, to ensure that no problem with Radon starts.

Radon is not just a problem that affects the air in your home. Many people do not realize that Radon can be present in your water as well as in the air in your home.  Radon in your water can pose health risks when you inhale or ingest the water while showering and going about your daily activities. When the water is sent through the faucet or shower head, the Radon gas can get into the air and breathed in. You can also swallow some in the water accidentally. Ingested Radon can cause stomach cancer, but these risks are not anywhere near as high as the risk of lung cancer from inhaling the gas. Treating Radon in your water is done one of two ways, you can remove the Radon at the point of entry or you can remove the gas at the point of use. Point of use treatment uses devices for your faucets and showers, to remove Radon as the water flows through the fixture. This treatment method is not as efficient, and does not remove all of the Radon from the water. Point of entry treatment is a more efficient treatment method, because almost all Radon has been removed from the water before it enters your home. Radon gas is so dangerous because it can cause cancer, and it should be avoided. Buying a home that uses Radon resistant construction can help protect your family from this dangerous gas. Regular Radon inspection should also be done, on both the air and the water you breathe and use. Understand the dangers of this invisible gas, and make sure you and your loved ones are not breathing it, or swallowing water that contains it.

Radon Tests Can Put Granite Countertop Fears to Rest

Granite countertops in the kitchen have become more popular due to the accessibility to process the material and also its affordable price. The fact that granite is earthly and found within the soil is a great allure to people right now, as well. Over the summer, there was a flooding of articles across the country about the testing of radon in granite kitchen countertops. Radon is a harmful radioactive gas that is formed from the decay of radium and is known to cause lung cancer when exposure is high. People can't see, smell or taste this gas, which makes it hard to detect.  Homeowners started to worry and ran to get their kitchens tested for the substance.

The outpouring of media attention was thought to be a ploy started by competitors within the stone countertop business. Some people in the building industry speculated that the actual levels of radon in the granite are so small to detect and therefore, not harmful.  Regardless of this, many people wanted to be safe and get their kitchens tested.  After all, radon is a harmful and potentially deadly substance.

Michelle Mastin, a homemaker with thoughts of starting a family soon, had bought her new home earlier this year with her husband and found 100 square feet of granite already installed in her kitchen. When she found out the news about radon possibly being emitted from the countertops, Mastin called Steven A. Nardozzi, president of EnviroTech Environmental Services, for help. Nardozzi brought James Gleason to help conduct the tests. Mastin wanted be absolutely sure that her home was safe before bringing children into it. Mastin was concerned for her own health, as well as her husband's and two dogs.

Nardozzi normally tests for asbestos and mold in homes, but lately has been busy testing for radon.  Since the news first hit about four months ago, Nardozzi has been unusually busy and has tested around 35 countertops. Only about a fourth has been found to contain radon.

Mrs. Mastin got her results a week later and found mostly negative results for radon within the countertops.  There was a minimal amount of radon found but not enough to hurt anyone, according to The Environmental Protection Agency.  Mastin was relieved that she did not have to do any remodeling to her kitchen and thought that Nardozzi and Gleason were professional and informative when conducting the testing. She was glad she invested the time and money to get these tests done.

Mark Makowski, owner of Solid Surfaces, states that sales of granite have lessened a bit, but people are still buying it. He also sells substitutes for granite, which are bought by the safety conscious. He believes that the monitoring of radon in granite is not a big issue. He works around a great amount of granite and had his materials tested. The results came back negative.

Radon in Granite Testing and Inspection

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In many homes, the level of radon is minimal, according to a study by researcher L.L. Chyi of the University of Akron in Ohio.  Most of the homes that had traces of radon detected, had only a fraction of the smallest amount that the Environmental Protection Agency states is harmful enough to encounter.  Also with the opening and closing of doors that lets fresh air circulate the house, the minimal amounts get further reduced.

It is important to filter out stagnant air when radon levels are high. Ventilation is the remedy most used for high amounts of radon found in homes. High amounts are most likely found in basements.

Granite in kitchens is common and most likely will continue to be in homes. It is important to be safe and get the material checked out, like Mastin did, even though research and findings have mostly found small traces of radon in granite countertops. Whatever the case may be, people should take precaution when buying and putting granite into their homes by testing the material first.
