Solar Roof Tiles
Solar roof tiles systems offer complete design freedom. They are eye-catching systems that do not detract from the architectural lines of the house. Solar roof tiles are structurally integrated to existing roof shingles; no support structure must be attached to the roof. They can withstand gusts of wind up to 80 miles per hour. They are UL listed as a prepared roofing cover; modules and inverters are UL listed as well. Solar roof tiles are wind and water resistant, creating a protection for the underlying roof. Solar roof tile systems are suitable for new roofs as well as an addition to existing roofs...continue reading

How To Shingle A Roof
Take time to familiarize yourself with the overall project. Before you begin, you will need to decide whether it is best to replace individual shingles or shingle the entire roof. You must decide which type of shingles is best for the roof. Shingles come in different sizes, shapes, and colors; personal preference does come in to play when selecting shingles, as do other factors. You will learn more about shingle selection below (under Shingle Selection). You will need to gather all of the necessary tools and ...continue reading

Imitation Slate Roof Shingles
Imitation slate shingles are often made from recycled materials, such as rubber. Rubber is easy to care for and durable. In fact, rubber is so durable that the shingles can last up to 50 years. That is quite an advantage when compared to the typical 15 to 20 year life associated with other types of shingles. Another advantage is that the shingles will be able to be recycled again once you are through with them...continue reading

The Absence of a Functioning Gutter
Anyone who has ever had a basement flood knows that a wet basement can cause a whole host of problems. A basement that gets wet frequently or stays moist can allow mold to grow, including toxic mold, and it can ruin any furniture or items that are stored in the areas that flood. Your gutter and leader system are a crucial part of your home, because this water drainage system will keep your basement dry. The system helps to direct the flow of water from the roof and top...continue reading

Steps for Cleaning Your Homes Gutters and Leaders
An individual's gutter system disposes of many gallons of water from the outside of their home and foundation every year, bringing about the reasoning for semi annual inspections and cleaning of gutters.  All gutters need to be sloped toward their opening for water to properly drain away from the home.  Any standing water is usually the main cause of gutter problems.  You can check the draining of your home's gutter system by pouring water into the gutter...continue reading

Roof Gutters: Care and Maintenance
Roof gutters should be cleaned twice a year to prevent an overflow of leaves and debris. You may need to clean out your roof gutters only once a year, or perhaps multiple times a year depending on where you live. Two complete cleanings combined with proper care and maintenance should be adequate for most areas. Before you begin, gather the supplies you will need to clean out the roof gutters. You will need a sturdy ladder, gloves, garbage bags, and a grill (barbecue) brush for stuck-on debris...continue reading

Choosing A Skylight
There are some general sizes for skylights but of course depending on the manufacturer that you choose you'll be able to get a variety of sizes to choose from. Typically, they range in size from 16 inches to 4 feet. The smaller ones that are usually around two feet wide and will fit between rafters are common as well. Buying a variety of skylights that has been fitted to the pre-existing models of home construction simplifies the installation process dramatically...continue reading

Moisture Problems with Windows and Skylights
For problems with skylights, it's always best to have the person who installed them or a roofer, to inspect and make any necessary repairs. If the leak is between the skylight and the roof, a roofer is your best bet, as they will be able to improve the flashing around the unit. If the leak is through the structure itself however, your only recourse might be to replace the entire unit. By following proper dehumidifying procedures, it's possible to reduce interior humidity levels and reduce...continue reading

Cleaning Gutters
Gutters redirect runoff water from your roof during rainstorms by allowing water to drain away from your home, so it's vital to keep your gutters clean so they can do the very important job they are designed to do. Gutters and downspouts must be cleared of leaves and debris so they can do their job. Standing water in gutters and troughs can rot wooden gutters and rust sheet metal gutters and also allows mosquitoes to breed

Quick Fixes For That Ailing Roof
If the flashing is badly corroded, it's generally best that you call in a professional, but if there are only a piece or two to replace you may be able to handle the job yourself. For example, it's a good idea to restore flashing that is worn in spots and to do this you'll need to wear goggles and safety glasses and clean the flashing first with a wire brush. Then wipe the surface with a clean moist rag and then using medium grade sandpaper, remove any remaining rust. Finally you can wipe off the surface with a clean rag. Getting to a job like this early will prevent the kind of extensive ...continue reading

Improving The Grading At Home
Most of the time, the builders do the proper thing and leave the grade of a new home's lot so that the water will flow away from the foundation, but it's often the case that the homeowner's improvements and new landscaping, change the grade for the worse. Keep in mind here that soil that has never been disturbed will shed water rather than absorb it, but all the soil around the basement would have necessarily been dug up during an excavation...continue reading

After You've Found The Problem
These smaller things are just as much a problem and often due to inferior construction or at least installation and often its the roofing and siding that need the special fixes that the educated homeowner can tackle themselves. However, to start you'll need the right tools for the job since you can really make a mess of things if you attempt to use makeshift implements to fix something that needs a specific tool.  Right off the top you'll need to familiarize yourself with the safest ways to work on ...continue reading

The All-Important Roof
Different kinds of roofs are susceptible to different problems.  For example, low sloping roofs with overhangs are prone to ice dam problems. Ice damming is the result of snow accumulation on the roof and is more common on poorly insulated homes. Here's how the problem works. After a snowfall, heat will escape from the house into the attic and melt the snow on the roof above. As the water runs down looking for the ground, it stops at the snow on the roof overhead that has not melted...continue reading

What You Need to Know About Roof Leaks
Here is a temporary repair that you can use until a more permanent solution can be found. Remember that roof leaks usually appear during storms when you cant make permanent fixes, but you can take some steps to temporarily halt the flow of water. An emergency patch can be made by using a putty knife and a caulking gun to apply a special roof patch to the hole from the inside. Make sure to work the compound in roughly so that it adheres...continue reading

Roof Checkpoints
Flashing is the next consideration. Look at the shape of it around the chimney and plumbing vents. The flashings main job is to stop water from leaking into the house from the joints where they meet the roof itself. Look for flashing that is missing, rusted or otherwise damaged and make sure to replace or re-caulk it.  Here its important to have a good look at the valleys where the roof joins between sections. These sections carry a lot of water during the spring and summer and they often take the brunt of runoff snow ...continue reading

All About Roofing
Another option is the slate roof where the slabs have been engineered to match the natural color of slate as closely as possible. What each of these styles will cost can be estimated by using a formula that you can get from a manufacturer on the Internet. Is It Time To Replace Your Gutters And Leaders?

Your roof drainage system is an important aspect of your home, and it can be a critical area for replacement and repairs. Gutters and leaders, which are also called downspouts, are part of the roof drainage system. These collect water that can collect or run off the roof of your home when it rains and snows, and gutters and leaders are responsible for directing this flow of water away from your home and foundation. The ground under the leaders should be sloped away from the house, to prevent any leaking into the foundation of the home from water that has pooled. Splash blocks, flexible drains, extensions for the leaders, and other accessories can also help the roof drainage as well. Gutters are hung from the roof edge, so that water will flow down into the basin of the gutter, and then follow the system all the way to the ground.

Gutters and leaders are important for the maintenance and condition of your roof. But too many times these components are overlooked, and this can lead to expensive repairs and a roof replacement, which can run ten thousand dollars or more. The integrity of your home, and the structure of it, can be weakened if the gutters and leaders are not in good working condition. Gutters and leaders that are clogged, damaged, missing, and leaking can cause severe problems in the future if they are not replaced as soon as possible. How can you tell when it is time to replace your gutters and leaders? You should inspect the gutters and leaders on your home at least once a year. Many homeowners do a thorough cleaning and inspection twice a year, in the spring and the fall, but many others will only do this once a year in the fall. Clean out any clogs, leaves, debris, twigs, and other items that do not belong in this system, so that there is nothing blocking the flow of water or your ability to see every aspect of the gutters and leaders.

When you inspect the roof drainage system, start at the top with the gutters and supports, and work you way down to the ground. Look for any gutter and leader supports that are broken, loose, rusted, missing, or need any repair or replacement. Look at the gutters and leaders carefully, for any spots of rust, damage, holes, cracks, missing sections, or other problems that would affect the ability of the water to drain completely without leaking. Plastic and vinyl gutters and leaders can become brittle when they age or are exposed to extreme cold, so this should also be considered during the inspection. Any leaders that are clogged can be cleared using a hose or snake. Look at the gutters and downspouts during a rainy period, to see if there are any leaks where the joints come together with a sectional gutter system.

During your inspection, if you see any holes, cracks, corrosion, rust, damage, missing sections, or any other problems, it may be time to replace the gutters and leaders, or at least sections of them that are not in good condition. Your roof drainage system protects your home from water, and sometimes there can be a lot of it if you live in certain areas. The gutters and leaders of your home are important in northern areas where a lot of snow and ice occur as well, and not just as protection against the rain. They can help keep excess accumulation of snow and ice off the roof because they allow the snow to melt and run off the roof, instead of sitting there and freezing into ice once it has melted. Ice buildup and snow accumulation can be extremely heavy, and this can put significant stress on your roof and the supports.

A careful inspection of the gutters and leaders on your home will help you determine when it is time to replace these components. Any pieces, sections, or components that have rust, damage, holes, weak spots, or that are missing should be replaced right away, to minimize any water damage that can be done if the roof drainage is inadequate, or if the water is not carried far enough away from the home and foundation. The gutters and leaders on your home are the defenses your roof has to prevent water buildup and damage, so making sure these components stay in good working condition can save you a lot of trouble and expense later on.

Poorly Pitched Gutters And Disconnected Leaders:
A Need For Concern

The drainage system for the roof of your home includes the gutters and leaders, and these components are critical for the protection of the roof and structure of your home. If the gutters on your home are poorly pitched, or the leaders are disconnected, this can lead to severe roof problems that can be expensive and time consuming to fix. If the gutters and leaders are not correctly pitched or are disconnected, then the water flow can not be correctly diverted from the roof properly. If the gutters on your home are not pitched correctly, or the leaders are disconnected, this should be a major reason for concern, because it can lead to other problems that can become serious, and even threaten your health and the health of your family, not just the condition of your home.

If your roof drainage system is not in great condition, this can cause many problems. Water may not be directed away from the roof, and can pool on it instead. This can lead to water leaking under the roofing material and getting into the home, and causing damage and a weakening of the roofing material and structure as well. This can eventually cause the roof and underlying materials to need replacement, which can be very costly and aggravating. Water that is not drained correctly can also contribute to mold and mildew growing on the roof and under the shingles, and this can be expensive to repair as well. Another issue is water that manages to get into the interior of the home, especially inside the walls. This can lead to mold contamination inside your home, and mold can be a big health threat to you and your family. Some molds produce mycotoxins, and Stachybotrys mold is a big culprit in health problems caused by toxic mold. Some molds can even be fatal in small children if the contamination in the home is severe enough and the amount of airborne spores are high. Even common cosmetic mold that is present can cause allergy symptoms and asthma attacks.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Structural damage is also a possibility if the gutters and downspouts are not correctly installed. If water can leak into your home, it can erode and damage the structural components and cause them to need replacement. This can result in gutting your home and completely rebuilding the interior, which can be very expensive and extensive. This can be prevented by simply ensuring that the gutters on your home are properly pitched to draw water away from the roof, and that the leaders are properly connected so that the flow of water can be drained away from your home and the foundation.

A gutter and leader drainage system that does not function correctly can lead to many problems with your home. Ice and water can back up under the shingles and fascia, damage can be sustained by the soffits of your roof, and siding can be deteriorated or change colors because of the water flow, Disconnected leaders will allow water to flow down the side of your home, instead of down the leaders, and this can cause water leaks inside the exterior walls and result in damage and water damage as well. A faulty drainage system can cause soil around the foundation of the home to be eroded, and the foundation can become cracked or eroded as well, resulting in water that can get into the basement and any crawl spaces of the home.

Gutters that are not properly pitched, and leaders that are not properly connected, can cause cracks, settling, and damaged areas in your patio, driveway, and sidewalks, mortar joints can become worn and weakened, paint can blister, bubble, and start to peel, and wood can rot because of water and excess moisture. Because of all the problems that can occur if you do not have proper drainage from your roof, it is essential that the gutters on your home are properly pitched and the leaders are fully connected properly. This will allow the water to drain from the roof properly, so that there is no pooling or buildup that can cause damage to your home and the components in it. The gutters should have a pitch or slope that is one inch for every run of forty feet at a minimum, and leaders should be securely and completely connected to prevent any standing water or other problems. Inspect your gutters twice a year, and make sure that they are properly pitched and in good shape. The same is true for the leaders attached to your home, a complete inspection will ensure that any problems are noticed right away before any serious damage can occur.
