Choosing A Replacement Skylight
There are some general sizes for skylights but of course depending on the manufacturer that you choose you'll be able to get a variety of sizes to choose from. Typically, they range in size from 16 inches to 4 feet. The smaller ones that are usually around two feet wide and will fit between rafters are common as well. Buying a variety of skylights that has been fitted to the pre-existing models of home construction simplifies the installation process dramatically...continue reading

Moisture Problems with Windows and Skylights
For problems with skylights, it's always best to have the person who installed them or a roofer, to inspect and make any necessary repairs. If the leak is between the skylight and the roof, a roofer is your best bet, as they will be able to improve the flashing around the unit. If the leak is through the structure itself however, your only recourse might be to replace the entire unit. By following proper dehumidifying procedures, it's possible to reduce interior humidity levels and reduce frost on the inside of windows...continue reading

Replacing An Existing Window
Although the most common windows nowadays are made from vinyl, there are still many double hung metal and wood framed windows left on the market that need to be addressed since their care is a little more complex. Remember that while the newer windows are almost maintenance free, some of the older wooden models have a style that many people still prefer. When you replace one of these windows, one of the tricks is to be careful as to not cause further damage to trim and framework...continue reading

Windows and Heat Loss
Storm windows are one of the more common methods and they work by creating a dead air space that foils heat loss. They work in the same way as thermal windows but for the storm window to work properly there cannot be any gap between the window frame and the wall covering. Still there needs to be weep holes in the frame of the storm window to release condensation...continue reading

Is Your Home Secure
Next, check your windows.  Your windows should all have the ability to lock and should not be easy to open from the outside.  Take the time to climb a ladder and check each window of your home.  Can you open any of the windows or remove them from the frame?  If so, it is time to replace the windows with modern security windows.  Security windows make it very difficult to open from the outside and many security windows are built with tempered glass which will not shatter when broken...continue reading

More Security Tips and Advice
Try to recognize the basic security risks that exist in and around your home such as old window or door frames, balconies or drain pipes that can easily be climbed, or hidden entry points. Then form a plan to reduce these vulnerabilities. Most windows and doors can be improved to better protect against forced entry by means of deadbolts and pins. Home security does not mean turning your home into a fortress but rather installing practical deterrents and reinforcements...continue reading

Security Doors and Replacement Windows
Windows and sliding glass doors are two of the most difficult points in your house to secure.  Even if you install a locking device on these openings, the glass and glazing in your windows and sliding doors can be broken for easy access.  You do not need to install metal bars over your windows in order to increase your security, instead choose a tempered or laminated glass that when broken still maintains a level of protection.  When you install tempered or laminated glass, even if your glass breaks it will not shatter ...continue reading

What You Need To Know About Windows
The question becomes then what to look for.  Starting in the basement of the home, you can look at the fit of the windows, and see if and where the frames may have been damaged by moisture. Often, condensation on the inside of the window in the basement will tell you that there is a moisture problem present.  Below grade windows are another concern.  Here, a window well should be fitted that will allow any outside moisture to be directed away from the house as well as the window...continue reading

Selecting A Replacement Skylight
Remember that a skylight can make any room in the house different. They can make a bathroom seem larger, a kitchen much more warm and cheery, or a bedroom a place to watch the stars. Although the industry has made great improvements in the quality of skylights and the flashing used in them, it is still essential that the consumer know of certain rules that govern where the best place for them to go are...continue reading

Improving Window Operation
When dealing with most of the homes on today's market, there are generally several types of windows that you'll come across and the more complicated of these is the casement window that generally has a mechanism to move the window out on a hinge. If a casement window is hard to crank, the problem may be as simple as a dirty crank assembly. It's easy enough to clean, but you need to take it apart enough to be able to see all of the assembly clearly. Open the window far enough so that you can see the extension arm... continue reading

Benefits of Windows and Skylights
Even more effective than typical windows for providing natural sunlight are skylights. Properly installed quality skylights can add beauty and functionality to your home, but improperly installed and low quality skylights can also cause a whole range of problems. During the winter months, moisture in the home can cause condensation to form on the inside of your skylight, which then can drip inside. A quality skylight should provide channels for condensation to run into to prevent...continue reading

Home Security Tips
The windows on any home are often the most vulnerable points of the structure. Not only are they glass, but the locking mechanisms on most windows are inadequate to prevent their being "jimmyed" or just forced open. The most common window security mechanism is a simple wooden or metal rod placed along the window's track preventing the glass from moving to the open position...continue reading

Types of Windows Available Today

When building a new home or when looking to replace your existing windows, it is exciting to think that there is a huge variety of windows to choose from today. If you want to take advantage of a gorgeous view, you can virtually have a whole wall of windows or several in a row to provide a breathtaking look at the ocean or mountain scenery. The choices are so mind-boggling that you might need some assistance in finding the right ones for your home.

First you should choose a window that matches the style of home that you have, contemporary or traditional, rustic or more formal. The windows should coordinate well with the flooring and cabinetry or other interior details. You also want to decide how much light you want, whether you want smaller windows just for ventilation or larger ones to take advantage of the scenery. Another consideration is the type of climate you live in and whether you should have windows that are more insulated to protect you from cold weather or a hot tropical climate. Energy efficiencies can be taken into consideration so that you can save money long-term on heating or cooling costs.

Many windows come in standard sizes but you can also order a customized fit for a particular area that is either odd shaped or smaller or larger than normal. There are also many types of glass to decide on with the most common being sheet glass or plate glass sometimes called float glass. Tempered glass is thicker and is used in areas with high impact winds where you want more protection and a glass that is safer when shattered on impact. Other choices include patterned glasses or colored glass that you might want to camouflage an area or create more privacy or a decorative look.

Here are some types of windows that you can choose from:

  •  Arch Top Windows  This type of window is more decorative and is generally used when you have an expansive window area so that this arched one is above another large window. Sometimes they are found above a door unit that leads out to a patio or backyard.

  •  Awning Windows  These windows are usually installed to provide ventilation without exposing the room to the rain or other weather. With a hinged top that opens outward, these are often found in basements where there just one or two. They can also be found in groupings that can be either vertical or horizontal and are often used along with other types of windows or doors such as one leading to the outside or in a row in a room that you want to have lots of exposure.

  •  Bay or Bow Windows  These windows are generally in grounds of three or more and are located in alcoves or extensions of the room outward that give the illusion of a larger room. A bay window can consist of a number of varying angles making it appear like half of a hexagon while a bow window is more rounded or curved. These windows are generally combinations of different types such as double hung and casement and usually have some that are fixed and some that will open although this is not always the case.

  •  Casement Windows  These windows are primarily for ventilation and usually have a crank out mechanism that allows it to open and close. They are hinged at the side and offer the best solution for allowing air to circulate.

  •  Clerestory  These windows are generally just below the roof line so they are above eye level and are often horizontal and provide sunlight where it would otherwise be a dark area.

  •  Double Hung Windows  These windows can be opened either by pulling up the lower sashes or pulling down the upper sashes.  These sashes are the sliding sections of the window and allow for ventilation.

  •  Hopper Windows  These windows are more popular on commercial buildings like a restaurant because the bottoms are hinged and the windows open inward. They can be used in a residence where there is space restriction or a problem with clearance and the window would not open out or there is a security screen or grill.

  •  Jalousie Windows  These are often called louvered windows and are created with glass slats that are set in metal clips and are opened or closed together like a glass shutter. They are popular in tropical areas where you want a breeze without letting in any rain.

  •  Palladian Windows  These windows are an Italian design that becomes a focal point in the room and are used where you want to emphasize the view and the design of the window.

  •  Picture Windows  These windows are generally a fixed pane of glass that will not open and are very often in a location where you want to emphasize the view such as in a living room or a room that usually overlooks the ocean or a garden or other scenic setting.

  •  Single Hung Windows  These are the same as the double hung windows except that the bottom sash only will slide upward for opening.

  •  Sliding Windows or Sliders  These are windows with two sashes, one of which will slide either to the left or right in a track and the other one is stationary. They often also have screens on the exterior and are generally used as a doorway to the backyard or a patio or balcony.

ENERGY Star windows are those that have been government certified to save you energy as well as protect your home and furnishings from sun damage from the effects of ultraviolet rays streaming into your home through your windows. They also protect your home from the cold in the winter and reduce condensation and interior fading of your flooring and fabrics. Because they are also environmentally friendly you are doing your bit for saving our planet. With a style and a type to fit anyone's needs, you will find windows that suit your needs and budget.
